This Turkish writer's work was completely unknown to me, so I went to a bookstore yesterday and bought the only available book of his, Istanbul. Okay, so admittedly I don't read many books by female authors (I know, bad me), but with those I have read I've noticed one thing: they don't write men well. I may have already been biased by knowing that the authors were female, but I'm pretty sure even if I didn't know that I would have wondered about the male characters in those books.

I'm expecting a lot of Hemingway replies.

I'd have to go with "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I mean, man, that had nothing. I don't think the writing was anything spectacular, and it's cast of vacuous, bland debutants bored me senseless. Jeeeeesus Christ, what a painful read.
